Stem and Leaf Mandarins

Meet John Clark

Stem and Leaf Mandarins

Your local farmers, Pat & Sam Gotelli have a walnut orchard in Linden, California

John Clark's grandfather and father started their family farm in 1950. Today, John and his wife continue the legacy of growing citrus. John graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, a prominent agriculture school. He uses both his education, and what he learned from his father and grandfather's experience, to sustain a successful farming business.

Nestled against the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas in Exeter, John believes there are two elements that have helped contribute to his quality product. The occasional frost, which allows the mandarins to develop their vibrant color, and the heavier, nutrient-rich soil found at the base of the foothills.

Clark sums up his passion for farming with this, "Farming isn't always easy but I wouldn't change it for any other occupation. Growing things I love to eat myself makes for a pretty great life."

Product Description

COMMODITY/VARIETY
Mandarins

Mandarins are a category within specialty citrus. Slightly smaller than oranges, mandarins are usually around 1.5 - 2/5 inches in diameter. Most of John Clark's Mandarin orchards are Satsumas and Murcotts.

Satsumas - Usually seedless and known for being extremely sweet with an easy peel. The peel is so easy it is sometimes called "zipper skin."
Murcotts - Can have a few or many seeds. Usually better for juicing because of the seed content. Also, not as easy to peel as a Satsuma.

YLF Pro Tip
Many fruits and vegetables require pollination between different flowers. Mandarins, like most citrus trees, are unique because they are self fertile. This means they only need one bee to move pollen within the same flower to pollinate the blossom.
